September 2015 Meeting – Annual Golf Tournament

Emily Sharp Rains is a seasoned transactional attorney and has worked with over 1, 000 companies nationwide.  She is also a serial entrepreneur with an insatiable appetite for building business.  Her experience as an entrepreneur gives her a unique insight into the needs of her clients and the perspective of its management.  Today, Emily pursues her passion for the law and business through her work at Westminster College where she is an assistant Professor, teaching business and tax law.  Rains holds a Juris Doctor from the University of Utah in 2003 and her LL.M. of Taxation from the University of Washington also in 2003.  Rains is licensed to practice law in multiple jurisdictions including Washington, Oregon and Utah.

Troy Hooton is a strategic minded CPA, entrepreneur, and educator with 20 plus years of experience in founding, growing and managing businesses.  He founded and serves as Managing Partner of the Trusted Partner Group, a professional services firm based in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Having a deep passion for education, Troy served ten years as an Adjunct Professor for the Bill and Vieve Gore School of Business at Westminster College.  Courses taught include; Mergers and Acquisitions, Business Valuation, Corporate Finance and Investments.  Troy also served as Vice Chair of the College Alumni Board and Chair of the MBA Alumni Committee

Topic:  Bankruptcy Law Changes and the Impact for CPA’s/Tax Attorneys
Speaker:  John Christiansen

John Christiansen is an attorney at McKell Christiansen & Wise PLLC.  John will discuss Mallo v. IRS, (2015) how that changed the playing field for CPAs / tax attorneys advising clients about late-filed returns and the interplay with bankruptcy.
John Christiansen primarily focuses on consumer and small business financial restructuring and has successfully restructured over 180 million dollars  for businesses and individuals here in Utah. Prior to entering into private practice, his prior work experience exposed him to a vast array of courtroom and trial experiences while working in a major crimes unit at a District Attorney’s Office, the UPC criminal division of the Utah Attorney General’s office and as an executive appointee under the Bush administration at the U.S. Justice Department.

In addition to his bankruptcy and restructuring practice, he has written and contributed to multiple college-level courses in business, bankruptcy and collections and currently is on the faculty at eagle gate college and Utah Valley University.

Topic:  The Ins and Outs of Commercial Lending and Credit
Speaker:  Nick Griffiths

Nick Griffiths, is a senior VP in commercial lending at Zion’s Bank.  Nick will talk about what a lending institution looks for on a company’s financials, etc to qualify for credit.

Nick Griffiths, Senior VP and Commercial Relationship Manager for Zions Bank, is a graduate of Brigham Young University’s Marriott School of Management.  He has worked in commercial banking for 15 years-12  of which has been with Zions Bank.  Presently, he works in Zions Bank’s middle-market, commercial-banking department where the focus is on companies with over $20 million in revenues and credit needs exceeding $5 million.  He is responsible for managing all aspects of a loan portfolio exceeding $225 million.  All financial analysis  and loan underwriting are done by Nick and his team.  He has been awarded with being the number one relationship manager for Commercial Banking in 2013 and 2014.

Ryan Rees, will be discussing the Federal Tax changes for 2014/15 as well as a variety of other important issues.

Ryan Rees has spent the majority of his career working in public accounting providing taxation and consulting services to individuals and businesses. He has extended his expertise outside the traditional CPA firm role by providing managerial accounting services and support to small and mid-size businesses. Additionally, Ryan has applied his proficiencies in public accounting into the academic field teaching intermediate and advanced financial accounting courses and CMA exam preparation courses
